What to Expect:
Duration: Cold plunge is a brief experience that can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. The exact duration of time varies based on individual preference and tolerance.
Immersion: Users immerse their entire body into the cold water, typically up to the neck or shoulders. The goal is to expose the body to the cold water in order to experience its effects.
Health Benefits:
Elevated Energy : Exposure to cold water triggers the release of hormones like adrenaline, epinephrine, and noradrenalin (also known as norepinephrine), which can improve energy and alertness and boost mood.
Muscle Recovery: Exposure to cold water can help reduce muscle inflammation and soreness, making cold plunges popular among athletes after intense workouts or competitions.
Pain Relief: The boost in norepinphrine you’ll get from consistent ice baths has been shown to be up to 5x. The enhancement of this neurotransmitter can dramatically reduce inflammation and help with chronic pain.
Stress Reduction: Cold water therapy has been shown to be an effective supplemental treatment for stress relief because it works to decrease the stress hormone cortisol. The shock of cold water is followed by a rush of endorphins and can help to reduce anxiety, provide a sense of relaxation and stress relief.
Improved Circulation: Cold water immersion can stimulate circulation and may help reduce symptoms of poor circulation, such as swelling in the legs.
Enhanced Immunity: Being immersed in cold water stimulates leukocytes, the white blood cells that help fight off sickness. It can also cause the lymphatic system to contract, forcing fluid through the lymph nodes which can aid in detoxifying the body and strengthening your immune system.
Momentum: Cold plunging has shown the ability to increase your baseline dopamine. Dopamine is the molecule in our brain and body that is linked to motivation. According to Dr. Andrew Huberman, dopamine can enhance of depth of focus and lower our threshold for taking action towards our specific goals.
