Make Your Nails Longer and Stronger

Whether your nail care is a form of self-care, an indulgence, or just routine maintenance, keeping your nails in tip-top shape is a worthwhile investment. Here are some tips to keeping your nails longer and stronger.

Moisturize Your Nails

Moisturizing is a well-known secret to healthy skin, but it’s often overlooked in nail care. While dry, brittle nails can be the result of many factors, they’re ultimately a cry for moisture, so consider proper moisture: the foundation of every nail care routine. When applying hand lotion, give your nails a little extra attention.

Avoid Contact with Water

You know how soft and bendy nails get after a long bath? The nail is like a sponge. It is 1,000 times more absorptive of water than the skin. Excessive water exposure can put significant strain on delicate nail cells, which can lead to brittleness, peeling, and breakage. Don’t avoid washing your hands, but do pay attention to your nail exposure to water.

Be Gentle

The best nail care is gentle care. You should resist the urge to use your nails as replacement tools—no matter how convenient it may be. When indulging in an acrylic or gel manicure, proper removal is important. When you peel those nails off, you’re really peeling layers of the nail, the nail plate, and that’s going to weaken your nails. Always consult a professional on the best way to remove acrylic and gel manicures.

Treat Your Nails Like You Treat Your Hair

Hair and nails are both composed of keratin proteins, so many of the same rules for treatment apply. Both can become dehydrated and damaged from over-processing. Frequent polish removal, gels, and acrylics do to nails what dyes, chemicals, and heat application do to hair. Just as hydration can help repair hair issues such as frizz and split ends, it can help improve dry and brittle nails. Like you would condition your hair with a leave-in or rich conditioner, you should condition your cuticles as well to promote healthy, growing nails.

Watch the Weather

Winter can be a rough time for skin, hair, and nails alike. Not only can cool, dry weather cause nails to get extra brittle, but extreme swings in temperature from going outdoors to indoors can cause additional damage. The shift from a heated home or office to the chilly open air can cause nail cells to contract and expand repetitively, resulting in a weakening between the cells, leading to breakage. It’s smart to always wear gloves in the winter and frequently moisturize your skin and nails.

Rethink Your Products

Nail files: Instead of those old-as-time emery boards, opt for a glass or crystal nail file. Traditional emery boards create microscopic tears in the nail that lead to splits and peeling.

Nail polish remover: In the best-case scenario, you would avoid nail polish remover altogether, but since most of us aren’t going to entirely give up the joy of a nice manicure, it’s better to instead use non-acetone removers that contain hydrating oils and ingredients.

Nail brush: Instead of digging under your nails with a filer, use a gentle nail brush to clean out dirt. Or you can use an extra toothbrush you have lying around.

Be patient with Nail Growth

If you’re a chronic nail-biter, you know the victory of finally growing your nails out past your fingertips. Healthy habits plus patience pay off in nail care, but the primary focus should be on figuring out how to strengthen your nails, not solving the puzzle of how to grow nails fast. Stronger nails can lead to longer nails if you practice good nail care, but it all takes time. If you battle brittle nails and constant breakage, it’s smart to keep your nails clipped short until they regain strength; then they’ll have the foundation they need to grow longer.

Self Care Series

What is Self-Care?

The answer is very simple.  Self-care is any activity that we do deliberately in order to take care of ourselves mentally, emotionally, and physically.  Practicing self-care is essential in maintaining a healthy and positive relationship with numero uno, yourself! Think of it as the Golden Rule reexamined. Treat yourself as you would like to be treated.

Now, I know what some of you are thinking. Taking time for you is not high on the priority list.  You have got way too much to do! It can feel selfish.  It can even make you feel guilty!   I recently started on my own self-care journey and it took weeks of griping and excuses before I gave myself permission to do something that was just for me! It then took an entire extra month more before I was not feeling guilty about spending time doing things I actually liked!

So, after 3 months of spending a lot of time getting to know myself,  I finally feel refreshed!   Self-care for me has helped to produce positive feelings, help boost my mood, help calm anxiety, and even elevate my self-esteem resulting in higher levels of self confidence.  And, here’s a major bonus, when you feel more confident, you get a certain bounce in your step that lets the whole world know, I AM FEELING GOO-OOD!

A lot of times when people talk about self care, they are talking about the emotional aspects of it.  Dealing with stress, anxiety, depression, and sadness often disrupt long term feelings of wellbeing.  Self-pampering does wonders to help trigger the relaxation response, which can prevent chronic stress from damaging your health.

Self-care takes practice and can mean different things to different people.  Here are a few basic things that everyone can add to their self-care checklist.

  • SLEEP! Sleep is an essential part of self care and taking care of you. Adults usually need 7-8 hours of sleep each night.  If you are having trouble sleeping, try things like rubbing lavender oil on your feet.
  • Eat well. DIET can be a scary word and there are tons of diets to choose from! Just trying to figure out what to eat can be stressful! Start small. Stick to things that are healthy and not processed. Try and replace one bad thing with a good thing, like water for soda or grilled instead of fried. How about eating vegis first? Small habits stick!
  • Learn to say no! Make a list of things you don’t like to do or just no longer want to do! Examples might be learning how to say no to taking on extra things that you know you don’t have time for. Maybe it’s turning off your phone at a certain time, or something as simple as not checking emails once you get home.
  • I know, I know.  You don’t want to.  You don’t feel like it.  You don’t have time.  But here’s the rub.  Exercise is not just good for you physically; it’s also amazing for your emotional well being.  It helps you to blow off steam and can lift your mood as well as your energy.  So choose something you like to do (or maybe that you don’t dislike as much ) and get to work!
  • Medical Care- schedule your annual exams! Do your follow ups!
  • Spend time doing things you love! Write that novel or short story.  Spend time with your family.  Visit the museum!  Whatever it is, take a cue from Nike and JUST DO IT!
  • Relax! Try relaxing exercises like breathing or meditation. Get a massage or facial or a pedicure.  Take a short walk, listen to your favorite song, call your favorite person.
  • Laugh! Laugh as many times a day as you can!

Follow me over the next few weeks as I take a deeper look into self-care.  I will be interviewing both team members and clients about their self-care regimens and talking about the huge benefits of the services at the Renaissance Day Spa as well as services that other businesses and friends of the Renaissance have to offer.  I would love to hear all about your self-care journey as well!  If you would like to be featured in our Self-care Series, please share your story with me at selfcare@thereneaissancedayspa.com.

Remember, taking care of yourself allows you to project awesomeness everyday!

Take care you,

Sick Of Your Dull And Dry Skin? A Facial Might Be Your Saving Grace

Facial
You may love the pampering and relaxation that comes from getting a facial, but it also comes with some serious health benefits for your skin. Women of all ages claim this beauty tactic makes their skin look younger and less dull.

So what causes facials to give your face this enviable glow? Mainly the cleansing, increased circulation, and lowering your stress levels. There are specific facials that may weigh heavily on one of these benefits over the others. For example, the Anti-Free Radical facial that we offer at Renaissance Day Spa is an ultra-hydrating facial meant to combat dry skin. This facial will help to improve and restore circulation to facial skin layers and increase the flow of oxygen enriched blood to the skin cells. This rush of blood to the skin gives you that healthy glow and plumps skin cells with nutrients such as vitamins A, E and D, which helps to fight free radicals that cause premature aging and dry skin.

With summer almost in full swing, this may also mean the inevitable sunburn that ensues from the long beach days and summer barbeques. If this is the case, then the Plantomen Lift Off facial might be exactly what you need. This facial specifically calms and soothes irritated and sunburned skin. This facial uses Propolis, which is a natural extract from beehives, that offers an antibacterial effect aiding in reducing redness.

If you’re looking for a well-rounded facial to do a little bit of everything, then we’d highly recommend the Herbal Indulgence facial. This facial is perfect for all skin types. With customized blends of natural herbs such as chamomile, lavender, lemongrass and rose combined in a clay mask, this facial will naturally detoxify and moisturize your skin.

Whether you’re just looking to be pampered for a bit or you’re needing to address certain issues, Renaissance Day Spa has a facial that will fit your needs. You’ll be leaving our spa with a healthy, glowing and youthful experience. To schedule your appointment today, call us at 910-484-9922.
